Resetting My Health Routines After Moving Into My Car
How Clarity and Alignment Has Inspired Me to Restart the Blood Type O Diet
After two years of following the Blood Type O Diet, you might think I’d have it all figured out. And in many ways, I did — it worked. I healed my gut, my energy improved, and my relationship with food completely changed. But recently, I hit a point where I knew it was time to reset.
So, why start over when something is already working?
Because life happened. And even though I was solid with the foundation of the diet, my routines unraveled — especially after moving into my car.
What I Got Right — and What I Outgrew
In the beginning, I followed the basics: eat this, avoid that. But over time, I dove deeper into Dr. Peter D’Adamo’s work, read beyond Eat Right 4 Your Type, made a huge breakthrough when I connected the keto diet as a characteristic of the Type O diet and began to try new foods and cooking styles.
I also noticed something important: the Blood Type Diet has evolved. With each new book and website update (like on dadamo.com and 4yourtype.com), there were refinements and even inconsistencies. Eventually, I realized I needed to create my own refined approach — based on my body, my experiences, and my healing journey.
No Diet Is One-Size-Fits-All
Even the Blood Type Diet, which I deeply believe in, isn’t a one-size-fits-all formula. Yes, we start by learning from external sources — books, charts, apps — but once we’ve built consistency, we have to tune inward.
That’s when you become the student of your own body. And that’s what inspired me to create The Blood Type Diet Health Reset Course, to help others move beyond the basics and reconnect with their unique healing rhythm.
When Life Knocks You Off Track
This past year hasn’t been easy. I experienced absolute devastating grief after the sudden loss of my mother — a life-altering moment that shifted everything. And just last month, I moved into my car, which required me to focus more on survival than on eating right.
I needed to:
Move everything into storage
Find a place to park my car at night to sleep in peace
Purchase window covers, a cooler, a portable battery, etc.
Create a bed that would suit my small Mitsubishi Mirage
Buy a portable stove (first propane, then butane because I was scared of the carbon monoxide)
Get a gym membership for shower use
And chase Wifi at Starbucks between the hours of 6pm and 8pm after work on a weeknight (I have my own portable wifi now)
It was a WILD time and I was exhausted, not to mention the daily lessons I had to learn along the way by just living the car life and needing to find solutions to little issues.
With all of that going on, the last thing I could focus on was balanced nutrition. Even though I was still technically following the Type O food list, I wasn’t truly aligned.
The Real Issue: Macros, Carbs & Candida
During that last month and a half of school (I’m a teacher), my meals became repetitive and convenient. I relied on shelf-stable proteins like canned sardines, mackerel, and yellowfin tuna — all beneficial or neutral for Type O.
But I was also snacking more on "allowed carbs" like rice crackers, mochi, gluten-free cookies, and dried mango. These are okay in moderation, but I wasn’t eating enough protein to stay in balance.
Type Os are carbohydrate-intolerant. We produce less of the enzyme amylase, which means we don’t metabolize carbs well. So when we eat too many — especially without enough protein — they get stored as fat.
And I could feel it. Not just in my body, but in my gut. I was bloated, foggy, and getting fluffy around the waist again.
Supplements Matter — Especially for Type O
Another pillar of the Blood Type Diet is supplementation. Even with the right foods, it’s nearly impossible to get all the nutrients we need from diet alone — especially after years on the Standard American Diet.
Before moving into my car, I was consistent with my nightly supplements. My essentials for Type O include:
Polyflora O: probiotic for gut support
Bladderwrack: to provide iodine nourish the finicky Type O thyroid
Stinging Nettle Root: for Candida yeast control
When I stopped taking them and started relying too much on carbs, some of my old symptoms returned which indicated a Candida flare-up. Internally, I was just as unbalanced as my living situation.
The Matcha Mistake I Ignored
In the midst of the move, I found a few Dunkin’ Donuts gift cards — cute end-of-year gifts from my students. Instead of passing them on to someone else who actually drinks DD, I figured I’d treat myself and see if there was anything I could drink there that was Type O friendly.
I started ordering a matcha tea latte with almond milk and asked for no sweetener, just like I’d order at Starbucks (where I’d ask them to add stevia). But Dunkin’s version was strangely sweet — even though they claimed there was no added sugar.
I didn’t have the mental capacity at the time to go online and check the actual ingredients of the powder, which was what I knew I needed to do next. I finished out the gift cards anyway, accepting that the drink probably wasn’t ideal for my gut and promised myself I’d stop going to DD.
Eventually, I shifted over to Starbucks, where I could better control how the drink was made — and I’d immediately notice if I forgot to ask for my stevia after telling them to remove “the classic”, a sugar syrup (hack!), I knew it would come out unsweetened.
Later, when I finally looked up the ingredients in their matcha powder — I wasn’t surprised. My gut had already warned me. That "harmless" latte was triggering my GERD, causing stomach discomfort, and even weird ear symptoms like itching and clogging. When the gut is off, symptoms can show up anywhere.
It’s Time to Reset — From the Inside Out
Now that I’ve identified what went wrong — not enough protein, too many carbs, no supplements, and hidden sugars — I’m ready to reset. This time, I’m doing it stronger, with the right portions and more awareness of macros.
And if you're feeling out of alignment too, especially in your gut, I invite you to reset with me.
